Nuwara Eliya Golf Club
Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

Nuwara Eliya is roughly one and a half hours drive from Kandy. You will be transported back in time a hundred years to Sri Lanka's colonial days, with a visit to Nuwara Eliya Golf Club At times you might even feel like you're in the Scottish Highlands. Built by British servicemen in 1889, the hill-country course is exceptionally picturesque, and enjoys a beautiful year round temperate climate.

The course is the longest in Sri Lanka and there are ample opportunities to get the driver out. Be warned though, this is leopard country, which is incentive to make sure you don't veer too far into the rough! The 12th, 13th, and 14th are known as 'Little Switzerland', due to the hills resembling the foot hills of the Swiss Alps, and are both a golfing challenge and visual memory to be cherished for life.

The clubhouse and bar is an atmospheric place to enjoy a drink and meal after your round. It is full of character and colonial history. Little has changed since the founding of the club and you can even enjoy a log fire on cooler evenings. If you want to have a taste of what life would have been like for a colonial planter 100 years ago, you will find no better example than the club house here. A member of St Andrews would feel very much at home here, with a large array of imported whiskeys and a billiard room
